What factors influence your choice of technologies?
Modern design, new technologies and favorable prices initially shape the search for the right product.
However, point-of-sale systems are among the most important, mission-critical components - and not just from a financial perspective. They manage the money.
From this point of view alone, reliability, insensitivity and long-term availability are the core requirements for a genuine POS system - which, unlike standard PC technology, must be able to cope with intensive loads from use and environment around the clock, usually for many years.
IBM has already summarized the fulfillment of these special requirements in a predicate, which TOSHIBA continues just as unrestrictedly: Retail hardened.
Construction
- Robust
The housing of the Point-of-Sale products is made of high-quality materials such as shock-protected, UV-resistant and flame-resistant plastic, as well as high-quality sheet metal with special coating to ensure electrical surface conductivity and prevent electrostatic discharge.
- Insensitive
Toshiba point-of-sale systems and peripherals withstand the high stress and wear typically encountered in retail applications. Touchscreens are sealed to prevent cleaning fluids from penetrating. Displays, printers and keyboards have features such as seals and drains that keep liquid away from function-critical components.
- User-friendly
Often, brilliant ideas are just details - but with a big impact: for example, monitors have small elevation around the edge, making it easy to place them on the table during installation - without scratching.
- Technical design
The motherboard used in each case is not a standard product, but is developed individually for each model. This maximum efficient communication of the components results in perfect data transfer, minimum power consumption and thus reduced thermal load.
- Durable
All components are designed for long-term use 24/7. This is complemented by a sophisticated ventilation system, which effectively channels even high amounts of dust past the components and prevents clogging and overheating.
Components
- Safety
A POS system consists of hundreds of individual components, each of which is intensively tested for running stability and interference characteristics. This ensures that the system is fail-safe, even when used around the clock, and also meets the licensing requirements in virtually every country in the world.
- Value
Only components are used that can withstand the harsh demands of the checkout environment over the long term. This includes not only the use of branded products, but also high standards of workmanship, e.g. gold-plated contacts instead of tin, which significantly improves conductivity and corrosion resistance.
- Durability
When selecting components, long-term availability is absolutely crucial so that the products can be delivered in exactly the same version for many years, thus making support of the software solution much easier as well.
Into the future with security
- Environment
Protection against liquids
Test: Pour 1 L of water over the product several times at different points. No component must be damaged. the system must continue to run properly.
Temperature
Test: In climatic chambers, the systems are operated under full load at rapidly successive temperatures between 0 and 45 degrees C and humidities between 8 and 80 %.
Chemicals
Test: Intensive spraying with household cleaners and alk. Disinfectants must not lead to malfunctions or changes in the surface condition, even over a longer period of time.
Electrostatic load
Test: While PCs are usually tested at electrostatic discharges of 8,000 volts, retail hardend systems must be able to withstand almost double the load of 15,000 volts without failure.
Board Flex Test - The point-to-point flexing of the skin board.
Power Cycling - Constantly cycling the system on and off over a long period of time.
Vibration Test - Systems are required to perform all operations flawlessly on a fluctuating vibratory plate while in operation. This simulates constant stress by opening and closing a cash drawer mounted below.
Quality secures the future
Retail-hardened solutions are not reconfigured or customized computers for office or home users, but true point-of-sale systems with maximum endurance and long-term reliability.
When TOSHIBA describes its systems and peripherals as "retail-hardened," they don't just mean their physical ruggedness and performance. No retail technology provider we know of puts its point-of-sale hardware through more rigorous testing than Toshiba. Their solutions are designed specifically for the retail sector and therefore not only offer reliability and robustness, but are also particularly durable and extensively expandable.
Retail-hardened technology can handle the rigorous and often unpredictable demands of the retail environment for many years, while remaining flexible enough to evolve with your business.
This allows you to continuously adapt your retail technology to technical developments and new requirements, instead of having to purchase a completely new system every few years.
Retail hardened = future-proof investment with security.
